Becoming a Member
South Central Electric Association is an electrical distribution Cooperative. We serve Watonwan, Cottonwood, and parts of Brown, Murray, Blue Earth, Jackson, and Martin Counties.
We have about 4,000 members and about 2,000 miles of distribution line. Of that, 300 miles are underground and 1,700 miles are overhead wire.
The South Central Electric Association office is located one mile west of St. James at 71176 Tiell Drive. We also have a crew in Jeffers and all crews respond from their respective offices.
South Central Electric Association is owned by those we serve. All new members must sign an application form and pay the membership fee of $5.00. You will be issued a Certificate of Stock in South Central Electric Association, with a face value of $5.00. We will refund your membership fee when you close your account and return the Certificate. You must also pay a $15.00 consumer processing fee which is not refundable. A $100.00 deposit will be required for all new members. This deposit will be refundable after one (1) year with interest if the credit rating is satisfactory and provided all bills are current. An unsatisfactory credit rating is defined as being contacted by phone, in person, or by letter for two months out of the preceding twelve months, or if the service is disconnected for non-payment of the electric bill.
Interest on the above deposit is payable from the date of deposit to the date of refund or disconnection. Date of refund will be approximately twelve (12) months from the date of deposit if evidence of good credit is demonstrated during this period.
