Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM)

ECM's (Electronically Commutated Motor) are used in high efficiency furnaces to operate the blower fan using less power than the standard motor. ECM's are DC motors that have the electronics built inside the unit to control speed. They may be variable or fixed speed and can be programmed to optimize the furnaces air flow. Because of the lower power usage these motors can be run more often which can lead to better air flow in the home and more efficiency for heating or cooling. For individuals with health factors that prefer to keep their windows closed and run their furnace or central air conditioner, units with ECM's could be beneficial.

South Central Electric offers a $25 rebate for the installation or retrofit of HVAC units with an ECM. SCE's rebate program is for one year only (2011). New units may also qualify for federal tax credit ask your dealer or check with the unit's manufacturer to see if a tax credit applies.

For a list of furnaces with an ECM installed visit the AHRI web site or ask your local dealer if the unit is equipped with an ECM. When visiting the AHRI web site select yes to "Electrically Efficient" to get a listing of units that may qualify. You will then need to double click on "certificate" to view the AHRI certificate. Check the unit's AHRI certificate which will state "Advanced main air circulating fan "e" electrically efficient furnace". If you have questions whether you qualify for the rebate give us a call here at SCE.
